New York Fashion Week
NYFW has a long and exciting history. It developed out of yearning, war, trust, and expansive dosages of NY resources and origin. Newyork has been considered the Hub of the modern fashion. But the ground reality is that the origin of the Paris show has outcast the popularity of NewYork fashion week. Paris has gained the popularity of the central fashion hub, from where all the fashion inspiration came. The fashion industry around the world was aided majorly by the seasonal fashion shows held in France.

Charles Frederick Worth, a Paris based designer, was the first to have models show off his designs to the audience. These shows were called “fêtes,” and later, they were called “fashion parades.” It spread across Europe through the 1800s and 1900s. The shows were private, high in class, and focused on selling the product. The first-ever fashion show in New York City held in 1903 by Ehrich Brothers.


The first-ever NYFW held in 1943. Publicist Eleanor Lambert named it initially as “Fashion Press Week.” These “press weeks” took place in multiple locations over the city in the fall and spring of each year. The idea of choosing the various areas was to cater to the editors widely so that they could attend to write about the designer’s upcoming release for that season.


Centralized Shows


Holding shows all over the city and at overlapping times was undoubtedly hectic. But at the same time, the chaos fit right into the image that New York wanted to present to the world. A city obsessively involved and is always on the move. Eventually, NYFW organized shows all operating in one location, regardless of the chaos it created.


In 1993, Fern Mallis wanted to centralize the shows to make it easier for buyers, models, and editors to attend as many shows as possible. For the next 16 years, the shows took place in tents in Bryant Park.


New York had established itself as a fashion capital, by this time, alongside London, Milan, and Paris. The idea of Organized and centralized shows changed everything. It formed a united front and unified the fashion scene in New York City. Despite this popularity, the phrase “New York Fashion Week” was not officially used. The average person often referred it to as such term starting in the mid-‘90s. The other cities, like London, were using the words “Fashion Week” for years.

Instead, the name of NYFW changed depending on who was sponsoring the event, because of which, what we know now as NYFW to previously been titled Olympus Fashion Week and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

Technology Incorporated Shows


As the fashion week grew in popularity, it became overwhelming for Bryant Park tents to contain all the shows and guests. Celebrities, frequently seen on the shows and it became standard in 2010. It made the events more prestigious and also, as a downside, making the events very crowded. Because of this reason, the shows were moved to Lincoln Center in the same year. The companies started the online streaming of the shows. Sometimes, they also made the shows available to watch later.

Gradually, with the rise of accessible technology, the fashion week began to change into what it is today. With the addition of more influencers attending the shows has taken away the reputation of fashion shows of being exclusive. It’s even possible for anyone to participate in the show with the package of Experience.

Sustainable Fashion and Contribution of the Fashion industry in Sustainability


The shows have become decentralized once again. Designers now choose beautiful and unique locations for their shows. The primary purpose of fashion week was to persuade the viewers to buy styles immediately; the models in the past even wore numbers on their outfits so that people could easily find the same look later, but now the shopping world that we have is wholly changed. Most of the people now do shopping online all the time, without waiting for the seasonal drop. To make matters more complicated, the fashion week carries a specific message about society. It feeds off people’s desires to be trendy and a “good consumer.”


Yet, we live at a time where overconsumption and emissions from the fashion industry are dangerously affecting the environment. Fashion week is something that we all have glorified in our lives. Yet, many parts are perhaps not ethical or useful about it.


What we can hope for fashion week is that it takes on sustainability as these designers could greatly contribute to reducing emissions and promoting sustainable fashion.
